The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad along an exterior wall, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or attic and is the indoor half of the system. Together these two units are what a contractor puts in when a central AC installation is done.

The refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting the indoor and outdoor sides through a small penetration in the wall or floor.
